Laura Gunderson, LMSW

Laura is one of our individual therapists who provides both telehealth sessions, and in-person sessions out of our Junction City office. Laura received her Bachelor’s degree in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies from Kansas State University in 2019, and her Master of Social Justice and Human Rights and Master of Social Work from Arizona State University in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Laura is a queer clinician and has centered 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy, social justice, intersectional feminism, and her passion for mental health throughout her education and career. Laura’s academic interests led her to study topics including U.S.-based anti-2SLGBTQIA+ regimes and risk and protective factors of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. Laura interned and worked at Pawnee Mental Health Services in Manhattan, Kansas, from 2022-2024 as a School Based Services intern and Youth Community Services Client Support Provider. She gained a deep understanding of community mental health and youth mental health needs. Laura also interned with True Colors Flint Hills and Curtis-Baker Therapeutic Services in 2024. She gained clinical experience working with clients, as well as writing grant proposals and engaging in Kansas political advocacy.

Laura is excited to work with clients and support them in meeting their personalized treatment goals. Laura's work with clients is primarily informed by the following approaches and modalities: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and the Gottman Method. Laura also writes WPATH-compliant letters of support for clients seeking insurance authorization for gender-affirming care.

Finn Kufahl, LMSW

Finn is one of our individual therapists and a lifelong Kansan with a diverse background of professional experience. They graduated with their Bachelor of Arts in English in 2008 from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and they graduated from Newman University in Wichita, Kansas in 2017 with a Master of Social Work. Finn has been an HIV/STD Public Health Educator, a Case Manager in a variety of settings (transitional living with teens, inpatient substance use treatment with adults, and in foster care with children and their parents), a foster parent for teen girls, and they have been in a variety of leadership and management roles prior to working in clinical social work.

Finn works with adolescent and adult clients and uses a person-centered, trauma-informed, systems theory approach. Finn is affirming and of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and relationship styles (monogamy and ethical non-monogamy), and they are knowledgeable about and affirming of kink/BDSM identities and lifestyles. Finn is a strengths-based clinician who will support and challenge you while you work to meet your goals and they will celebrate with you when you meet your milestones.

Finn has experience working with clients who are navigating a variety of life challenges: difficult family relationships and dynamics, traumatic events and PTSD (past and current), suicidal ideation, anxiety, depression, boundary setting, self-care, chronic illness, psychotic symptoms, abuse and neglect, emotion regulation, self-harming behaviors, and issues related to being part of a marginalized/oppressed group.

Finn is located in Lawrence and provides all sessions virtually. They accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna commercial, Medicaid, self-pay, and offer an income-based sliding scale for those without insurance.

Darin volwiler, LMFT

Darin is a dedicated therapist, offering both in-person sessions in Junction City and telehealth services. He earned his Master’s in Couple and Family Therapy from Kansas State University in 2024, with a focused study on the unique experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ clients. His background includes significant non-profit work in Washington, DC, where he utilized that experience during graduate school to look at the legislative impact of anti-2SLGBTQIA+ policies and the crucial role therapists play in such contexts.

Darin views therapy as a collaborative process that builds on clients lived experiences to foster understanding and drive meaningful change. His approach integrates a Narrative framework with elements from Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Experiential Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to address a wide range of challenges. Additionally, he is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR Level II trained).

In addition to this, Darin has been a yoga teacher since 2013 and a Forrest Yoga Guardian since 2018. He has an understanding on how the body responds to trauma and how to move and breathe through challenging moments. Darin brings this mindfulness into sessions to assist clients gain greater insights; because of his experience in yoga, Darin is fascinated by the somatic experience of emotions and how each of us may feel emotions physically.

With experience working with individuals, adolescents (13+), families, and couples, Darin is committed to helping clients navigate and overcome difficulties in a supportive and empathetic manner.

LP Curtis-Baker, LSCSW

LP is our practice owner and one of our therapists. They work out of a strengths-based, sex-positive, anti-oppressive, feministic focus. They are skilled in a variety of different evidence-based treatment modalities and pick which modality to use with a client based on the client’s specific needs. They primarily utilize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as well as EMDR with the majority of clients. LP has also completed training in Internal Family Systems and often uses this in collaboration with EMDR. Their age of focus is 12 and above. LP has significant experience working with treatment focused around gender and sexuality, serving many clients in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, a community which they are also a member of. LP frequently works with clients wanting to process traumatic events or compound trauma, religious trauma, traumatic grief and loss, clients that are experiencing significant self-harm and suicidality, and clients struggling with emotion regulation. LP has over a decade of experience working in multiple areas of the field including creating programs to support clients facing homelessness and food insecurity, community mental health services, working as a foster care case manager, a foster care placement specialist, providing in-home family therapy services through Family Preservation, child abuse and domestic violence crisis intervention services through Family Advocacy Program, as well as providing therapeutic services for residents of local long-term care facilities. LP was named Mental Health Professional of the Year in March 2025, a peer-nominated title awarded by Trans Heartland for their role in providing excellent care to the queer and trans community in Kansas.

Melissa Dennison, LSCSW

With over 25 years of experience working within criminal justice, domestic violence, and child welfare systems, Melissa has dedicated her career to helping individuals, couples, and families navigate life’s most difficult challenges. Her professional background has provided extensive experience supporting those impacted by trauma, addiction, relationship conflict, and major life transitions.

Melissa is one of our part-time clinicians specializing in substance use treatment, relationship counseling, and domestic violence intervention, using evidence-based approaches to help clients create meaningful and lasting change. Her clinical work incorporates evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), and she has received training through the Gottman Institute to support couples in improving communication, rebuilding trust, and strengthening their relationships.

In addition to this type of therapeutic work, Melissa has had the unique opportunity to co-lead our state-certified Batterer Intervention Program with her husband of 31 years, a group offered in-office and virtual that provides valuable insight into relationship dynamics, accountability, conflict resolution, and long-term partnership.

Melissa believes therapy should be a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered. Whether you are working through trauma, substance use concerns, marital or relational challenges, domestic violence issues, anxiety, or the effects of difficult life experiences, she provides a compassionate, goal-oriented approach tailored to your unique needs.

Melody mcdowall, LSCSW

Melody is our Batterer Intervention Program (BIP) Director providing court‑ordered domestic violence assessments, ensuring statewide standards are upheld. Her work in this area reflects her commitment to accountability, victim safety, and community‑wide violence prevention.

Melody is a seasoned clinical social worker and nationally recognized expert in domestic violence, sexual assault response, and batterer intervention programming. With more than 25 years of experience serving military and civilian communities, she has built a distinguished clinical career including statewide policy influence.

Early in her career, Melody served as a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Police Response Advocate Coordinator, and was a long‑time victim advocate roles in which she built, trained, and supervised collaborative community response systems providing 24/7 crisis intervention. From 2011-2022, Melody served as a Clinical Social Worker with the U.S. Army’s Family Advocacy Program at Irwin Army Community Hospital, where she provided trauma‑informed therapy, conducted complex psychosocial assessments, managed high‑risk domestic violence and child abuse cases in collaboration with other legal entities and multidisciplinary teams. She is also an experienced forensic interviewer and has provided expert testimony in numerous domestic violence and sexual assault cases. In addition to her clinical roles, Melody has served as Acting FAP Clinical Supervisor and Team Lead, guiding staff, overseeing case reviews, shaping program standards, and mentoring MSW interns and new clinicians. Her leadership extends beyond the installation: she has been appointed to both the Kansas Governor’s Implementation Planning Committee and the Kansas Attorney General’s Advisory Board for Batterer Intervention Programs, where she helps shape statewide policy, standards, and grant strategy for victim services and offender intervention.

In addition to her role at CBTS, Melody currently works at the Department of the Air Force Headquarters as a Policy Analyst focusing on interpersonal violence and integrated resilience.

Melody holds a Master of Social Work from Washburn University and is a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker in the State of Kansas. She continues to serve on multiple domestic violence task forces, community coalitions, and advisory boards, reflecting her lifelong commitment to strengthening safety, justice, and trauma‑informed care across Kansas.
